VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.
Success at the free throw line in the final 1:26 of Sunday's game helped No. 23 ranked Guilford College hold on for a 75-67 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over No. 14 Virginia Wesleyan College in the Jane P. Batten Student Center.
The Quakers hit 8-of-8 in the final 86 seconds to stave off the steady threat of the Marlins, who trailed only 71-67 with 1:01 remaining to play. Eric Belkoski hit four of the pressure-packed freebies and Caleb Kimbrough and Ben Strong put down two each for the Quakers, who won on the VWC court for the first time since 2004.
It was also only the 11th Guilford victory in the 38-game series between the schools, but also a win that capped a regular-season sweep of the Marlins for Guilford, its first since the 2000-01 season.
While Guilford improved to 14-4 overall and to 9-2 in the ODAC, Virginia Wesleyan dropped to 15-4 overall and to 9-3 in the loop.
It was a tight game from the start, with both teams taking the lead in the first half. While the Quakers opened up a 25-15 spread with 10:47 remaining before the break, VWC put together a 13-0 run to push out to a 28-25 lead four minutes later.
Guilford took the lead for good on a Belkoski jumper with 4:29 before halftime and opened up a 40-35 lead by the break. The Quakers built their lead to nine points twice in the second half, but could not shake off the Marlins. VWC cut the spread to four points four times in the final 8:45, but could not find the spark to ignite a take-over run.
Strong scored 30 points, putting up 27 shots and hitting 13. Belkoski finished with 13 points. Strong and Tyler Sanborn both pulled down seven rebounds to help the Quakers to a 38-29 advantage on the boards.
Tonton Balenga led VWC with 19 points, hitting 7-of-15 shots, including three triples. Norman Hassell and Stephen Fields tallied 12 points each for the Marlins, who hit 8-of-22 three-point attempts overall.
