Mass-Dartmouth 88, Southern Maine 69
Feb 2, 2008

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA — The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s men’s basketball team used a 14-4 run in the second half to take command and ran away from visiting Southern Maine, 88-69, in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. The victory allowed the Corsairs to remain as the only unbeaten NCAA Division III men’s basketball team in the nation, and as one of four undefeated men’s teams at any level.

UMass Dartmouth got a driving layup from junior point guard Reece Freeman to break a 45-45 tie with 15:39 remaining. Freshman forward Brandon Stephens followed with a lay-up, senior guard A.J. Tavares connected on a three-pointer and senior center Dan Holbrook scored from close range as the Corsairs seized a 56-47 advantage with 12:49 remaining. Moments later, sophomore guard Jeff Macchi’s jumper and free throw and a three-pointer by sophomore Matt Walker pushed the lead to a dozen points at 65-53, and they led by double digits for the remainder of the game.

The Corsairs built an early 10-point lead at 26-16, but the Huskies rallied, using a three-pointer by Jamaal Caterina to cap a 12-2 run and create a 28-28 tie with 7:56 left in the first half. Freeman’s layup made it 32-28 with 4:32 to play, but Caterina’s three-pointer and layups by Troy Jellison and Drew Coppenrath allowed USM to take a 35-32 lead with 56 seconds left before halftime. Stephens and Tavares made layups in the final minute that gave UMass Dartmouth a 36-35 lead at the intermission.

“We pushed the ball for the first five minutes and got ourselves the lead, then the game slowed down and they took advantage of it,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. “They got the ball into their big men for high percentage shots, and got themselves back into the game. In the second half, we did a better job of attacking them and running the floor. We shot the ball well from the perimeter, and played with intensity on defense.”

Stephens led the Corsairs with 21 points, Holbrook added 17, and Tavares contributed 16. Freeman had 12 assists, the fifth time he has had double digits in assists in a game this season, while Holbrook grabbed 10 rebounds for a double double.

Caterina of the Huskies led all scorers with 22 points. Coppenrath contributed 11, as did Nick Gooding. Caterina and Coppenrath each grabbed seven rebounds, as UMass Dartmouth out rebounded Southern Maine, 33-32.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 19-0 and 9-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Southern Maine fell to 10-10 and 5-4 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Tufts Wednesday evening, while the Huskies will host Eastern Connecticut State next Saturday.
