Wes Ladwig may have catapulted himself to the top of the list of those vying for Midwest Conference Player of the Year honors. The 6-2 junior guard scored a career high 40 points to lead the Carroll College men's basketball team to a 115-113 double overtime road victory over 19th ranked Lawrence University.
Trailing 83-80 after a pair of Lawrence free throws, Ladwig hit a 40 foot three pointer at the buzzer to force the first overtime period.
A basket by Ladwig with 10 seconds remaining in overtime pulled Carroll to within 98-96. LU's Ryan Kroeger turned the ball over with six seconds to play, setting up junior Nate Zimmerman's jumper with just three ticks on the clock to force the second overtime period. In a fitting end to the game, Ladwig hit the game winning shot with two seconds remaining in the second overtime period.
Sophomore John Hoch scored 21 points for Carroll while senior Ryan Mueller added 16 points, including a crucial three pointer with six seconds remaining in regulation. Freshman Eric Thompson came off the bench to add 13 points while senior Jeremy Bohn and Zimmerman finished with nine and six points, respectively. Bohn also pulled down a team high eight rebounds.
The win pushes Carroll to 11-5 overall, 7-3 in the MWC while Lawrence falls to 14-2 overall, 9-1 in league play. The win also keeps the Pioneers in the hunt for the league championship. In addition to playing at Carroll in the regular season finale on Feb. 23, Lawrence also has tough games with Lake Forest College and St. Norbert College on its schedule.
