BLOOMINGTON, Ill.
The Carthage College women’s basketball team (15-4, 7-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 35th in the Jan. 29 “D3hoops.com” poll, fell into a first-place tie in the CCIW with Illinois Wesleyan University (17-2, 7-1 CCIW) on Saturday, Feb. 2 with an 80-63 loss to the No. 18 Titans at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill. The loss also ended the Lady Reds’ school-record winning streak at 10 games.
Carthage jumped out to a 5-0 lead and led by five, 13-8, at 15:34. Illinois Wesleyan took the lead, 18-15 at 10:20, and opened up a eight-point lead, 31-23, at 5:30. Carthage used a 9-2 run to close to within one, 33-32, at 2:41. The Titans went back up by seven, 39-32, at 1:24 and led by four points at halftime, 41-37. The Lady Reds re-gained the lead, 45-44, at 16:21, and the game turned into a chess match for the next nine minutes, with the Lady Reds still leading by a point 51-50, at 10:06. The Titans went on a 13-3 run to grab a nine-point lead, 63-54, at 6:16. Carthage pulled to within four, 65-61, at 4:27, but IWU closed things out on a 15-2 run for the final, 17–point margin, 80-63.
Carthage shot 43 percent (24-56), while Illinois Wesleyan shot 41 percent (24-58). Katie Jarger and Lisa Gartelos each had 13 points for the Lady Reds, while Shana Lieberman had 11 points and seven assists. Illinois Wesleyan’s Mallory Heydorn scored a game-high 20 points on eight-of-19 field goals, including four-of-seven from three-point range. Claire Sheehan had 15 points, Sarah Bull 14 points, and Crystal Dye had 10 points and game-high 13 rebounds.
“Give Illinois Wesleyan credit,” said Carthage coach Tim Bernero. “They executed what they set out to do better than we did. We stabilized things in the first half and got a lead, but they just killed us on the offensive boards. When a team can score like Illinois Wesleyan, you just can’t give them extra chances. We also made a mistake in letting Mallory Heydorn shoot so many three-pointers in the first half. In the second half, I thought the difference was their edge at the free-throw line. That game was still close late, and all of the sudden it turned into a 12 or 13-point game. It is what it is. We have to go back to work and get after it. The immediate reaction is that we want to play Illinois Wesleyan again at our place, but we have five tough games to play first before we see them again on Feb. 23. If we take care of those games, then we have a chance to see what we’re made of when we play Illinois Wesleyan again. We’re still 7-1, and they can’t take that away from us.”
Carthage plays host to CCIW-opponent North Park University (2-16, 1-7 CCIW) on Tuesday, Feb. 5 in a 7:30 p.m. game at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis.
