CENTER VALLEY, Pa.
Senior Eddie Ohlson recorded his second career double-double with 10 points and 10 assists and a strong defensive effort led the DeSales University men’s basketball team past Wilkes University, 71-61, in a Freedom Conference game on Saturday afternoon.
The win is the 23rd straight at home and gives the Bulldogs the season sweep over the Colonels as they improve to 17-2 overall and stay unbeaten in the Freedom Conference with a 7-0 record heading into a clash with the defending conference champions, King’s College, on Wednesday evening. Wilkes falls to 10-8 overall and tied for second place in the Freedom Conference with a 5-2 mark.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw two ties and four lead changes. After the Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-4 lead and later holding an 18-9 advantage, Wilkes took control with a 14-2 run to take its first lead of the game, 23-20, at the 5:51 mark of the opening half. A short jumper from Ohlson and a lay-up on the next possession from sophomore Eric Salem quickly gave DSU the lead back and with the score tied at 27 late in the half, senior Jamie McCloskey knocked down a triple from the top of the key to give DeSales a 30-27 halftime lead.
Junior Matt Zwetolitz connected on two treys to lead a quick 8-2 run to open the second half that gave the Bulldogs a 38-29 lead but seven quick points from the Colonels cut the margin down to two points (38-36) with 14:55 to play.
From that point Ohlson took over the game with some terrific passing. Just after Wilkes cut the lead to two points, Ohlson found McCloskey streaking down the court for a lay-up plus a free throw to push the lead up to five. Four consecutive points by Wilkes made it a one point game but Ohlson hit sophomore Darnell Braswell with a perfect back door bounce pass, again found McCloskey in the open court for a lay-up, and rifled another backdoor feed to sophomore Jim Malatesta for an easy lay-up to give DeSales a 47-40 lead.
After a free throw from sophomore Chris Gulla for the Colonels, Braswell hit a jumper just below the foul line and Ohlson drove the lane for an off-balance lay-up to give the Bulldogs a 51-41 lead with 8:45 on the clock finalizing a 10-1 run after Wilkes had cut the lead down to one point.
The lead continued to be 10 points at the 6:49 mark when WU scored six straight points to make the score 55-51 with 4:33 to go. Ohlson went back to work and after the Colonels came out of a timeout in a zone, he found junior Ed Lapinski all along on the opposite low block with a diagonal pass over the Colonel defense and followed that possession with a pass to Braswell all by himself in the left corner for a three-pointer to give DSU a 60-51 advantage with 3:42 left. The lead never fell lower than seven points the rest of the way as DeSales converted 9-of-12 from the free throw line over the final two and a half minutes to post the final margin.
Eight of Ohlson’s game-high 10 assists came in the second half as he was a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor to lead the attack. Braswell was sensational on both ends of the floor totaling 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Zwetolitz also reached double digits with 11 points, including three three-pointers. The combination of Lapinski (9 points, 7 rebounds) and Stricker (8 points, 6 rebounds) totaled 17 points and 13 rebounds and McCloskey gave the Bulldogs a huge lift off the bench with eight points.
Junior Steve Kline finished with a team-high 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting and senior Matt Gould totaled 12 points. Sophomore Anthony Gabriel and freshman Chris DeRojas also chipped in with nine points in the loss.
DSU continues its quest to earn the top seed in the Freedom Conference playoffs on Wednesday, February 6th when they travel to King’s College in another important Freedom Conference game beginning at 8:00 pm.
