ALBION, Mich.
With Garrett Gibbons, ’06, and Zak Silas, ’07, - both members of Albion College’s 2005 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship squad – watching from the stands, the current Britons put on a championship caliber performance in upsetting fourth-ranked Hope College, 56-52, inside Kresge Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. Albion held Hope to its lowest scoring total of the season as the Flying Dutchmen connected on 33 percent of their shots from the field (18-of-55). Albion also won the battle of the boards, finishing with a 41-23 lead in rebounds. In a game that featured 11 lead changes, Albion took the lead for good on Drew Yancey’s jumper that made the score 47-46 with seven minutes remaining. Yancey’s basket was the start of a 7-0 run for the Britons which included two free throws by Jim Cash and a 3-point goal by David Stasiak. Hope countered with a 6-0 run, tying the score at 52 on Marcus Vanderheide’s layup with 2:18 left. Albion scored the final four points of the game from the free throw line as Dean Raven and Andy Reule both went 2-for-2 from the stripe. Reule finished with nine points and eight rebounds. “Reule made two clutch free throws at the end but he also got the defensive rebounds,” Albion coach Mike Turner said. “A lot of guys made major contributions as usual.” Yancey led the Britons with 10 points, connecting on 5-of-8 shots from the field. Albion, however, received contributions from everyone as it enjoyed a 22-6 edge in bench scoring. Bill Leising and D.J. Mocini both scored nine for the Britons. Derek Van Solkema led Hope with 18 points. Jesse Reimink and Vanderheide finished with 12 and 11, respectively. Albion (12-5 overall, 6-2 MIAA), winners of six in a row, is tied with Calvin for second place in the MIAA. The Britons and Knights trail Hope by a game. Albion plays at home again Wednesday night as Kalamazoo College provides the opposition. The junior varsity game tips at 5:15 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 7:30 p.m. “We play Kalamazooo who beat us last time and we play them at home on Wednesday again,” Turner said. “So hopefully we'll get another good crowd.”
