ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Uche Ndubizu made a game-tying bucket at the buzzer, then scored four straight in overtime as third-ranked Rochester defeated top-ranked Washington (Mo), 73-70, at the Palestra.

Ndubizu finished with 20 points, hitting eight of 12 from the floor, 4 of 8 from the line. He added 11 rebounds in 39 minutes. Rob Dominiak scored 21 points on 7 of 11 accuracy (5 of 7 outside the arc) in 33 minutes. Jon Onyiriuka had a double-double with 13 points, 10 boards, three assists, one block, and three steals.

All-American Troy Ruths led the Bears with 26 points, nine rebounds, and five assists in 41 minutes. Cameron Smith scored 12 points, Tyler Nading and Ross Kelley had 11 each. Nading had five assists and three steals, Kelley three assists and two thefts.

Rochester improved to 16-1 overall, 5-1 in the University Athletic Association. Washington, which had a 12-game winning streak snapped, is 14-3 overall, 5-1 in the UAA.

The Bears and Yellowjackets are tied for first place in the UAA standings. Chicago, which visits the Palestra on Sunday, is 4-2. Brandeis and Emory (they meet in Atlanta Sunday) are 3-3. Carnegie Mellon and NYU are 2-4, and Case is 0-6.

Two free throws by Jeff Juron tied the score at 67-all with 2:15 left in OT. With 1:24 to go, Juron got the ball to Onyiriuka in the lane. He went up for an eight-footer, but passed to Ndubizu for a layup. That put Rochester ahead, 69-67. He made two free throws with 50 seconds left to extend the lead to 71-67.

Ruths sank a layup, trimming the margin to 71-69, with 37 seconds remaining. Max Kaplan broke free from pressure and was fouled dribbling from the baseline to the foul line in the forecourt. He made the first shot and missed the second. It was 72-69, with 23 seconds left.

The Bears missed a three-pointer and Ruths collected the rebound. He was fouled by Onyiriuka missed the first, and sank the second (72-70) with nine seconds left. Chmielowiec made the second of two free throws with seven seconds left. Washington rushed the ball up court, but Danny O’Boyle’s jumper bounced off the front of the rim at the buzzer.

Dominiak and Ndubizu brought the season’s high crowd of 1,800 to its feet on consecutive trips downcourt as the game clock wound below six minutes in regulation. Dominiak’s first four-point play of the night helped Rochester edge ahead, 48-47. Nading erased that lead with a layup (49-48 WU).

Dominiak did it again, banking in a three-pointer from the top of the key from Chmielowiec’s handoff, then drawing a foul on Smith. His free throw put the Yellowjackets ahead, 52-49. Nading’s jumper in the circle made it a one-point game again. Ndubizu spied an opening, drove down the lane, and slammed the ball in with his right hand. Rochester went up, 54-51, and the crowd was back on its feet, roaring.

Washington answered as only the Bears can: with nine straight points in a span of 2:39. Kelley drove for a layup. Ruths kicked the ball out to a wide-open Smith in the left corner and he drained a three, putting the Bears up, 56-54. Smith added a layup after a steal, and Nading’s jumper pushed the lead to six, 60-54, with 2:30 to play.

Chmielowiec’s trey got Rochester within three with 2:16 left. After Ndubizu missed two free throws, Onyiriuka put back the last one, making it a 60-59 Washington lead at 1:13. Ruths restored the lead to three on a layup with 52 seconds left. Ndubizu’s jumper in the lane made it 62-61 with 15 seconds to play.

Danny O’Boyle made the first of two free throws with 10 seconds left. Onyiriuka rebounded the second shot and got the ball in the hands of Juron. He drove upcourt and found Ndubizu on the left side, 12 feet from the basket. A quick spin around the defender led to a bank shot that fell through, just as the regulation buzzer sounded.
