Alex Porter scored six of her career high 25 points in overtime as the University of Rochester defeated Washington University, 58-55, in overtime at the Palestra.
Porter hit 8 of 14 from the floor, 9 of 12 from the line. She had 10 rebounds, one blocked shot, and three steals. She was Rochester’s only double-figure scorer. JKulie Marriott and Courney Donovan had six points apiece.
Jill Brandt led the Bears with 12 points. Kathryn Berger had nine points and 10 rebounds. Janice Evans and Alex Hoover scored eight points.
In the overtime, Porter made back to back layups to push Rochestr in front, 52-48, with 1:36 left. Brandt’s layup and free throw got Washington within 52-51. Porter made another layup. The Yellowjackets needed four free throws in the final 23 seconds to secure the win. Julie Marriott made two and Johanna McNelis made two.
Rochester is 16-1, 6-0 in the University Athletic Association. Washington is 12-5 overall, 4-2 in the UAA. Brandeis, Chicago, and Washington are all tied for second place at 4-2. Case, Emory, and NYU are 2-4. Carnegie Mellon (0-6) is still searching for its first UAA win of the season.
The game was marked with 13 lead changes and 11 ties. A layup by Kelsey Robb forced a 21-all tie at halftime. Porter scored four points to push Rochester in front, 27-24, early in the second half before the Bears answered with six straight – four by Brandt, for a 30-27 lead with 12:47 left.
Neither club could pull away. Hoover’s jumper put the Bears up, 44-41 with 3:53 to go. Porter made two free throws, then Melissa Alwardt scored on a layup off a feed from McNelis (six assists) to put Rochester ahead, 45-44, with 46 seconds to play. Porter made the second of two free throws for a 46-44 lead with 18 seconds left. Hoover knocked down two free throws with nine seconds remaining. Rochester got the inbounds pass in Porter’s hands and she raced down the lane in traffic, only to have her shot fall off the rim at the final buzzer.
