NEW YORK — New York University junior guard Dari Magyar buried a jumper with 17 seconds left in the game to give the Violets a 62-60 lead and NYU hit 2-of-4 free throws in the final nine seconds to take a 64-60 victory against Bowdoin in a sectional semifinal of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night. With the victory, NYU (26-1) — ranked No. 2 in the country — advances to the sectional finals, where they will face Emmanuel for a shot at the Final Four. With the loss, Bowdoin ends its season with a 21-8 record — the best mark in the history of the

Early in the first half, junior Jessie Mayol and Lora Trenkle buried back-to-back field goals to give Bowdoin an 8-5 lead with 16:55 left. NYU responded with a 13-2 run capped by a three-pointer from senior Melina Nappi-Kaehler to give the Violets an 18-10 lead with 11:32 remaining. NYU still held a 26-20 lead when first-year Courtney Trotta delivered a three-point play to trim the margin to 26-23 at 4:27. NYU hit 3-of-6 on three-point attempts in the first half and shot 54% from the floor to help their cause. The Polar Bears shot a respectable 52%, but were hampered by 18 first-half turnovers. Sophomore Kristi Royer led Bowdoin with six points in the first frame but picked up two fouls that would allow her to play in just 11 minutes of the first half. Angela Vicari paced NYU with eight points in the first half.

The lead ballooned to 41-25 as Magyar converted a layup 39 seconds into the second half, and NYU still held a 48-34 lead with 13:01 as junior Meg Barber drilled one of her two long balls on the evening. Bowdoin started a thrilling comeback at this point, rattling off a 14-4 run over the next six minutes sparked by four points each from Kristina Fugate and Trenkle. With 6:00 minutes left to go, the Polar Bears managed to tie the score at 54-54 on a pair of Jamie Bennett free throws.

After NYU clanged two of its 12 missed free throws on the night, Bowdoin assumed the lead as Trenkle hit Royer for a lay-up and a 56-54 lead with 4:47 remaining. Fugate drained two free throws to push the Polar Bear edge to 58-54 with 3:59 left. A Fugate field goal pushed the margin to 60-55 with 2:55 remaining, but the Polar Bears would not score again.

Sophomore Allison Herman hit a jumper for the Violets to cut the margin to 60-57 at 2:02 and Magyar tied the game at, 60-60, at 1:45 with a three-point play.
