79, Springfield 56 Emmanuel (26-2) jumped out to a 36-18 halftime lead with its stifling defense, limiting Springfield to 6-for-30 shooting and causing 13 turnovers. The Pride (24-5) were held scoreless until junior guard Katie Strong scored the first of her 14 points with 13:50 remaining in the half. Springfield went on a 12-0 run, including six of junior forward Catherine Proto's team-high 15 points, to pull the Pride within seven, 44-37, with 13:04 remaining in the second half. Emmanuel answered with a 15-3 run over the next four minutes, and increased its lead to as many as 24 points to put the game out of reach. Sophomore forward Julia Demirer registered 14 points and 8 rebounds, including 8-of-11 freethrows, while junior guard Marcy Tillman totaled 11 points, 4 steals and 3 assists to increase the Saints school-record single-season win total to 26. Senior co-captain guard Cara McMahon scored 12 points and made three steals in her final game for the Pride. Emmanuel moves on to play Cortland State on Friday, March 9 in the Sweet 16 at a site to be determined. |
