85, Nebraska Wesleyan 71 The Prairie Wolves (15-10) used 54% shooting from the field to stay close in the first half. Wendy Makovicka scored seven points in just six minutes of play before picking up her second foul. NWU held its biggest lead at 26-22 when Jill Fosdick hit a jumper with 7:18 remaining in the opening frame. Fosdick scored eight of her 13 points in the first half. Wartburg led 59-48, when NWU's Tina Lottman answered with her third three-pointer of the game. Shuree Oldehoeft then scored a traditional three-point play to draw the Prairie Wolves to within 59-54. Nebraska Wesleyan made 13 of 14 free throws in the game, while Wartburg converted 21 of 29. The Knights responded with a 19-6 run to take their biggest lead and put the game out of reach. Oldehoeft scored 15 of her game-high 23 points in the second half and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Wartburg shot nearly 60% from the field in the second half. "The timing
of our mistakes hurt us, and theirs didn't," Prairie Wolves Head "The key for us was having only nine turnovers," Wartburg Head Coach Monica Severson said. "And our half-court defense was much better in the second half." Summer Allen scored eight of her 10 points in the second half, but for the game NWU was outplayed on the offensive boards 14-4 and committed 20 turnovers. "We can't hang our heads at all," Allen said. "It's desappointing for it to end this way, but now it's up to the younger players to keep it going." Makovicka finished with 11 points for the Prairie Wolves and Fosdick had a team-high five assists. "Not being able to play our senior day game was a letdown, but given a second chance, we stepped up and took advantage," Fosdick said. "With all of the injuries, I just wanted to play like these games were our last." Wartburg (25-4), champions of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and ranked No. 21 nationally in the latest d3hoops.com Top 25 poll advanced to the Sweet 16. The Knights were led by Brianne Schoonover and Holly Mohs, who scored 17 points each. Molly Mason and Jenni Donohue added 14 apiece. Nebraska Wesleyan finished its third consecutive winning season and will lose six seniors to graduation from the squad that earned its first national tournament berth and victory in school history. The loss to Wartburg was just the second against NCAA Div. III opponents in White's three seasons as head coach. "We overcame a lot this year with four knee injuries," White said. "Hopefully, they learned how to respond in adversity, because the real world is waiting for them now." |
