Second-round game stories

Hardin-Simmons 106, Guilford 77
ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons advanced to its third straight NCAA Sweet Sixteen, with a 106-77 win over Guilford in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Cowgirls were led by Kendra Anderson who had 29 points and seven rebounds. Four other players were in double figures for the Cowgirls including Beth Ulrickson 16, Andrea Burrows 15, Laura Ricci 13 and Lauren Harris 12. Melanie Orsak had six points, six steals, four assists and four rebounds to lead the Cowgirl floor game. Ulrickson led the team with nine rebounds.

The Cowgirls had a 45-24 lead at halftime and outscored the Quakers 61-53 in the second half for the win. The key to the game was an 11-0 run in the second half that extended the Cowgirl lead from 71-57 to 82-57. The run consisted of a 3-pointer by Burrows, followed by a 4-point play by Ulrickson six seconds later after a Laura Ricci steal. Anderson started and ended the run with baskets.

The win improved the Cowgirls record to 22-5 and Guilford ended its season with a school-best 22-7 ledger. The Quakers were led by Kate Goodman's 16 points.

HSU will play Baldwin-Wallace in the Sweet 16 at a site to be announced on Sunday. The Cowgirls lost a 76-67 decision to B-W earlier in the season.
