State 70, Oneonta State 64 The win for Cortland advances them into the round of 16 for the first time since 1992 next weekend at a site to be determined against Emmanuel. The loss for Oneonta ended their 24-game winning streak and their season 26-2 overall. The win for Cortland set a school record for wins as they remain alive at 27-2. The first half played out as predicted with both team battling closely to a 27-26 score at the half in favor of Cortland. There were four ties and eight lead changes as most of the half it was a one point game. The largest lead for either team was five points for Cortland at the 9:15 mark with the score 18-13. Oneonta was able to hold Cortlands Kate Smith to two points in the first half. She played only 12 minutes as she got into foul trouble and had to sit. Leading the way for Oneonta were seniors Paula Polce and Kristen Hall and junior Patti Schroh who all had seven points in the first 20 minutes. Cortland opened the second half with their run to take a 37-30 lead. Smith led the way with six of her team-high 16 points in the opening run. Oneonta cut the lead to 41-37 with just under 15 minutes remaining, but six straight points by Cortland pushed the lead to 10 points at 12:16 remaining. With just over ten minutes to go Cortland still had a 10 points lead before Oneonta began to battle back. A Polce putback at 6:39 cut the lead to 55-50 in favor of the visitors. Over the next four minutes the lead shifted between four and six points until a Schroh free throw and a Polce layup cut the Cortland lead to one at 63-62 with 2:20 left. A Smith basket for Cortland gave them their three point lead back at 2:08 remaining. Two straight trips down the floor Oneonta failed to score and were forced to foul the last minute of the game. Cortland made five free throws down the stretch for the final tally. Polce finished the game and her career for Oneonta with a game-high 30 points and a team-high eight rebounds. |
