60, Southern Maine 49 Southern Maine, Division III runner-up, took a 22-20 first half lead including 9-points and 5-rebounds from sophomore forward Kara Crockett. The Huskies (20-7) took their largest lead of the game on a 3-pointer by freshman guard Jessica Libby with 9:50 remaining in the first half. Springfield junior guard Katie Strong tied the game 1:17 into the second half with three of her team-high 14 points as the Pride went on a 24-7 run to take its largest lead of the game 50-33 with 5:48 remaining in the game. Senior co-captain Cara McMahon came off the bench to score 11 points, while junior forward Catherine Proto grabbed 13 rebound and scored 6 points to lead the Pride to its first NCAA Tournament win since 1982 when Springfield defeated Bently 68-57 in the Division II Tournament first round. Strong also registered 4 steals, 3 in the second half. Southern Maine was led by Crockett's 11 points, 12 rebounds and 6 blocks, while freshman guard Megan Cressler totaled 14 points, (11 in the second half). Springfield, who only gives up 52.5 points per game, held Southern Maine 21 points under its season average (70.4) while out-rebounding the Huskies 45-35. The Pride advances to play Emmanuel on March 3 at Simmons College. |
