2001 The Blue Knights (18-9) advance to take on New York University (24-1) on Saturday at 6pm in New York City. Rensselaer, which set a school record for wins in a season, end the 2000-01 campaign with a 23-5 mark. After trailing 33-24 at the half, the Mount Saint Mary outscored the Red Hawks, 18-5, in the first ten minutes to take the lead for good. Included in that span were two 8-0 streaks by the Blue Knights. The first runs was sparked by sophomore guard Lisa Malecki, who tallied six of the points. On the second, junior forward Lindsey Charette accounted for all eight points. Rensselaer finally broke Charettes streak with a jumper from the key 11:09 into the second half, making the score 42-40 in favor of the Knights. After a Deborah Polansky three-pointer, the Red Hawks pulled to within one (45-44), but Mount Saint Mary went on a 12-0 run over the next 2:40 to put the game away. The Blue Knights eventually took a 16-point lead before Rensselaer, which shot just 28.6 percent from the field in the contest, and just 21.6 in the second half, closed the gap for the final margin. The first half saw Mount Saint Mary take an early lead but the Red Hawks used a 9-1 run to take earn their biggest cushion, 27-16, late in the first half. The teams traded baskets and RPI took its nine-point lead into the half. |
