Southern Hospitality: Piedmont Classic

Been a great day so far. Any time you can go without a jacket at the end of December you have to be pretty happy, right? It’s certainly a better trip weatherwise than the one I took this weekend last year.

Played a little bit of tourist this afternoon before heading up here to Demorest, Ga., with evidence below.

This is CNN

Game just underway. Going to go take some pictures. Chatted with Maryville (Tenn.) coach Randy Lambert briefly before this game (Maryville/Averett) — haven’t seen him since his turn on the men’s basketball national committee ended. We’ll have more later. Not a big crowd here but definitely pro-Maryville.

Also got to see Piedmont’s excellent baseball stadium.

Should also mention I got welcomed in the game program tonight, which is always cool but also a little surreal. :)

  2. Pat Coleman Says:

Things not going well for Maryville in the early going as Averett leads 15-7 with 13:11 to go in the half. Averett’s shots are falling and Maryville hasn’t hit the few open looks it has gotten.

  3. Ralph Turner Says:

Maryville 36, Averett 35; at the half (WBCR broadcast).

First lead was at 3:20 left in the half.

  4. Pat Coleman Says:

Maryville got outrebounded through the first 20 minutes but Averett turned the ball over 13 times. Eight Scots have scored and 11 have played, all of them for five minutes or more. Ben Williamson leads with eight points as Maryville has a 36-35 advantage at the half.

  5. Ralph Turner Says:

Averett 50, Maryville 40. The WBCR announcers are talking about how much Averett is “out-hustling” Murvul during a 12-0 run. 15:00 left.

  6. Pat Coleman Says:

Yep, they played well in transition. Maryville answered with an 11-0 run.

  7. Ralph Turner Says:

Murvul gets an 11-0 run. Now tied at 53.

  8. Ralph Turner Says:

I enjoy listening to Murvul’s announcer, George DeBobby (sp?)

  9. Ralph Turner Says:

    Averett 64, Murvul 59. 6:35, Murvul’s ball.

  10. Ralph Turner Says:

    Averett 71, Murvul 66; 0:31 left.

  11. Ralph Turner Says:

    Final — Averett 74, Maryville TN 70.

Rebs: Averett 45, Maryville TN 39.

Although I assumed that they’d all be “Rebs” on these teams, I must say those are pretty deep rosters…

  14. Pat Coleman Says:

I’ve added interviews with Maryville coach and AD Randy Lambert — we talk about his team as well as the Great South’s membership issues and the Division III/Division IV discussions — and Averett coach Jimmy Allen.

  15. Ralph Turner Says:

I enjoyed the interviews. Thanks for coming!
